Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Balls with Caramel Ingredients

You only need 5 ingredients for these simple Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Balls!

  • Powdered Sugar– ensure this is fresh and soft
  • Peanut Butter– this is the perfect time to use a brand such as Jif or Skippy
  • Butter– Use unsalted, unless your peanut butter is unsalted
  • Chocolate– Your average milk chocolate chips will get the job done
  • Caramel– I used small caramel bits from Kraft brand, but you could also cut a Werther’s Original caramel in half if you cannot find these

How to Make These Peanut Butter Buckeyes

Making these Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Balls with Caramel is easy, but time consuming.

To start, mix together the powdered sugar, butter, and peanut butter. Use your teaspoon scoop to grab an even portion of dough. Flatten it out and place a caramel bit in the center. Close it up and roll it around in your palms to create a smooth, round ball. Place on a baking dish and repeat until all the dough it used.

I recommend you turn on a show or video. This recipe makes about 75 peanut butter balls. You’re going to be doing this for about 20 minutes.

Once done, place in freezer for 20+ minutes.

When you are ready to start coating the peanut butter balls in chocolate add a couple handfuls of chocolate chips to a microwave safe bowl and melt the chocolate until smooth.

Remove the rounded peanut butter balls from the freezer. Drop one at a time in the bowl of chocolate, using a spoon to ensure it is fully covered in chocolate. This will be messy (and also time consuming).

If you don’t want so much chocolate on these Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Balls just drizzle the chocolate on top. This will be a large time saver as well!

Place the finished product in the freezer for 15+ minutes to harden. When ready, place in an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator or freezer.

Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Balls with Caramel Variations

Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Balls are basically the same as what some consider a ‘Buckeye’. It’s a mixture of peanut butter, sugar, and butter that is shaped into spheres, froze, and dipped in chocolate. Basically, a homemade Reese’s peanut butter cup!

One variation is this recipe AKA stuffing it with caramel!

Instead of milk chocolate try dark chocolate or white chocolate. Both would be awesome choices!

Another would be to use a different nut butter. Try almond butter, sunbutter, or a fun high-protein nut butter from Nuts ‘N More (use code PIECEOFLULU10 for 10%)!

You could even do all of the above, and take it even furtherroll the buckeye in chopped fruit, nuts, sprinkles or seeds! This will definitely make for a flavorful dessert.

Baking Tips

If you are finding yourself struggling with any aspect of these Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Balls with Caramel, here are some tips that you may find handy:

  • If you are struggling with removing the dough from a classic one teaspoon measuring cup, use one of these one teaspoon cookie dough scoops. You will be able to press proper amount of dough right into your hands!
  • If you are about halfway through rolling your dough you may find that it is getting a bit soft. Place it in the fridge for 15-30 minutes to cool back down and become easier to work with.
  • If you find the dough is sticking to your hands too much, dip the tips of your fingers in water. This should fix your issue!

Reese’s Puppy Chow Ingredients

The ingredients for this recipe are similar to what you would need for your typical puppy chow.

Like classic recipes you’ll need peanut butter Chex, chocolate Chex, powdered sugar, chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter.

The thing is, to make it Reese’s puppy chow, you’ll need a few Reese’s products. Reese’s Pieces, Reese’s minis, and Reese’s peanut butter chips are the key ingredients that make this recipe out of this world!

I was able to find all three of these ingredients at my everyday grocery store. The Reese’s Pieces and Reese’s minis can be found in the candy aisle while the Reese’s peanut butter chips are in the baking aisle. If you’re unable to find them, just try and find the closest alternatives!

How to Make Reese’s Puppy Chow

Making Reese’s Puppy Chow is perfect for beginners! With that, there’s little actual baking involved. The most you do is microwave some ingredients. Does that classify this as a no-bake recipe? Let me know what you think in the comments down below!

puppy chow ingredients

To start, add both flavors of Chex to a large bowl and set aside.

In a small bowl add in chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Put this mixture in the microwave to melt for 30 seconds. If there are still intact pieces afterwards, stir it thoroughly. It is best to microwave it for the shortest amount of time possible but you still need it to all come together.

Then, pour this mixture on top of your bowl of Chex and carefully mix. After the chocolate is nearly evenly dispersed add in your powdered sugar and continue to combine.

Once the chocolate covered Chex is evenly coated with powdered sugar add in all of your Reese’s sweets!

Mixing Muddy Buddies

Mixing your puppy chow can be a bit difficult. I mean you don’t want to break too many pieces of Chex, but you want it evenly coated!

One way to do this is to use a large soft spatula and continuously swipe the spatula along the insides of the bowl. This method will take some patience but it has an awesome result, with minimally broken Che pieces.

Another way to combine all of these delicious ingredients is a bit old fashioned. Simple add all of your ingredients to a large gallon bag, zip it closed, then shake! This will lead to a few more broken pieces but it is definitely easier- and more fun!

Which Peanut Butter?

Classic puppy chow and muddy buddies recipes include peanut butters such as Skip or Jif. These are totally fine. I just wanted you to know you don’t have to use these options. A natural peanut butter will still hold your ingredients together just as well!

I used a chunky peanut butter to add more texture. Honestly, I couldn’t really tell. So if you have creamy or crunchy peanut butter, both work perfectly well.

Have you heard of Reese’s spread? I haven’t tried it in this recipe but I can only imagine how heavenly it would amplify the Reese’s flavor of this puppy chow. Use this instead of peanut butter! If you give it a go be sure to leave a comment down below so others can see how it is!

These heavenly cinnamon rolls have banana rolled into them and are topped with a decadent peanut butter icing. You’re going to want to make a double batch.

Cinnamon Rolls From Scratch

A homemade batch of cinnamon rolls and be intimidating your first time. Instead of spending a half hour mixing and kneading dough you could pop a can and have a delicious smelling kitchen in minutes. But what you miss out on is the experience. Spending time baking together is a chance to bond, make memories, and get creative.

In years to come you’ll be able to reminisce about the wonderful time you had baking and making a mess together then devouring a warm ooey gooey batch of homemade banana cinnamon rolls with peanut butter icing.

Bread Flour

If you go to make these cinnamon rolls and the only ingredient you’re missing is bread flour- don’t worry! Although bread flour is preferred you still won’t be able to put these down if you use regular All-Purpose flour. The difference between the two are minimal. Bread flour has a slightly higher protein and gluten content. This makes for the chewier and more ‘bread-like’ rolls.

If you’ve never even heard about bread flour, fear not. Your regular grocery store likely has it; you likely just haven’t noticed. It is typically right by the normal flour. Look up and down. It’s not a normal purchase so it won’t be at eye-level.

Peanut Butter Icing

If you’re a mega peanut butter lover like me follow the recipe as is. If the flavor of peanut butter can be overwhelming to you just use a little less and increase the amount of cream cheese!

Wanting a more balanced cinnamon roll? Try using one of Nuts’n More high protein nut butters.

I used plain old creamy Jif in my icing because of its consistency but if that isn’t something you have in your house, just use what you have. No need to go buy something special!

The Classic Combo

Peanut butter and banana is simply one of the best combos out there, right?! It just makes good sense that it be combined with the beast breakfast dessert to ever be created.

If you want to amp up the flavor try topping your rolls with walnuts or pecans. It’ll add the crunch factor you may be missing AND compete the classic combo!
