Why You’ll LOVE This Recipe

These Hot Chocolate Waffles are the perfect breakfast for a snowy winter day. They combine the comfort of homemade waffles and joy from a cup of hot chocolate!

My favorite type of waffles are ones with a crip outside and a fluffy center. So, that’s what I developed! If you love that type of waffle too, you’ll love these!

When to Make Hot Chocolate Waffles

You can make these waffles whenever you’d like- breakfast, lunch, dinner, winter, summer, fall, etc.

But, I would highly reccommend making them on a cold winter morning. This recipe can bring together your family.

Excite the kids by telling them what’s for breakfast and have them help mix the batter! Then, allow them to add their favorite toppings.

This will soon become a nostalgic recipe reserved for these precious mornings.

Ingredients to make hot chocolate waffles

Ingredients

This Hot Chocolate Waffle recipe is similar to typical waffle recipes, with a few key changes. Some of the main ingredients are:

Hot Chocolate– I used Starbucks Double Chocolate Hot Chocolate. Be sure to use a full-sweet variety!

Vanilla Extract– You don’t need to use your best vanilla extract for this recipe. The hot chocolate flavor will dominate, but it does add to the flavor profile.

Vegetable Oil– These waffles are soft and fluffy on the inside and crip on the outside due to the oil. I love waffles like this!

In addition to these ingredients you’ll also need some kitchen staples- baking soda, baking powder, all-purpose flour, milk, and eggs.

Mixing bowls of dry and wet ingredients

How to Make Hot Chocolate Waffles

Create some magic in your kitchen when making this special recipe. Put on your apron, turn on some good music, and pull out your waffle maker!

You only need one bowl for this recipe that means no need to dirty a sink-full of dishes just to make some waffles!

Before you start, get your waffle iron warming up!

In a large bowl add in flour, hot chocolate mix, baking soda, baking powder, vanilla extract, eggs, milk, and oil.

Once your waffle iron is ready (some will have a light that turns on or off). Generously spray both sides of the iron with a non-stick spray then add in a portion of waffle mix.

If you have a waffle iron with a light that indicates when the waffle is done, go by that. If not, you can know your waffle is done cooking when it doesn’t stick to the iron as you open it and you can easily remove the waffle without issue.

Additions and Swaps

There are endless pairing combinations to enjoy with hot chocolate waffles! Here are some that I have tried out-

  • Strawberries, blueberries, or banana slices
  • Maple Syrup
  • Vanilla Ice Cream
  • Whipped Cream
  • Chocolate Sauce
  • Crushed Candy Canes
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Butter

let me know what your favorite additions are in the comments below!

Expert Tips and Tricks

There is no additional sugar in this batter. In my opinion, the Starbucks Double Hot Chocolate mix is sweet enough. If you like a sweeter waffle add 1/4 cup of sugar to the batter!

Avoid opening your waffle iron while the waffle is still cooking. If you do, the waffle may stick to either side and be broken in half. This will result in a bit of a mess!

You can actually meal prep waffles! If you have a bit more time in the morning you can make a large batch of batter and cook them each morning. If you are a bit tighter on time, cook all of your waffles ahead of time and simply warm them back up in the toaster or airfryer for a good-as-fresh waffle!

Add a less sweet flavor to these waffles. The hot chocolate flavor profile is strong, as we want. But, a better eating experience happens with a variety of flavors; enjoy this meal with a glass of milk!

A Word From A Registered Dietitian

A batch of Hot Chocolate Waffles sounds as if it may be a ‘sugar overload’ of a breakfast. This is just one meal. A balanced diet is accumulated over a large period of time. Consider this single meal into your year of eating. It’s pretty insignificant!

Beyond the nutrition facts, a fun and creative meal can bring about so many deeper benefits than any ‘superfood’ or ‘green juice’ ever could. A meal like this creates memories and a time to bond with family. That is the power of food.

Why You’ll LOVE This Recipe

Do I really need to explain to you why you’ll love this recipe?? This is a holiday classic for my family. If you’ve never had it, I can’t recommend it more!

This recipe makes a generous portion. It is meant to be shared with loved ones and enjoyed all throughout the holidays.

You can keep a dish stocked with Christmas Muddy Buddies to snack on as you pass by, pack an easy after-lunch sweet, or bring to a holiday party! There are SO many occasions this treat can come in handy for. Make it once and enjoy it all month long! (if it makes it that long!)

Ingredients to make Christmas Muddy Buddies

Ingredients You’ll Need

Christmas Muddy Buddies has all of the goodies you want. The main items are:

Chex– You really can use any flavor of Chex, but I recommend one box of peanut butter and one box of chocolate to really amp up the flavor!

Red and Green M&M’s– These M&M’s are only in stores around the holidays but if you can’t wait check out Amazon for festive M&M’s year-round!

White Chocolate– Using white chocolate instead of milk chocolate will have this version of Muddy Buddies appear more snow-like. Perfect for the chilly holiday season!

Reese’s Bells– I had the TOUGHEST time finding Reese’s bells near me. These would be incredibly cute in this mix but if you’re not up for a $13 bag of chocolate, just use some regular mini Reese’s.

Powdered Sugar– As you may expect, there’s a hefty amount of powdered sugar in Muddy Buddies. Hey, that just means it’s extra sweet!

In addition to these ingredients you’ll want to use a large bowl. If you don’t have a large bowl, you can always do two batches in smaller bowls.

Small christmas tree bowl of puppy chow

How to Make Christmas Muddy Buddies

Creating a batch is more about mixing, rather than actual baking. This makes for a great recipe to make with kids! They can be tasked with throwing in the items, mixing it up, and maybe only having a couple sneaky pieces!

In a very large bowl add the peanut butter and chocolate Chex pieces. Give this a good mix.

Next up, melt your stick of butter and white chocolate. Drizzle those onto the Chex. Before you begin to mix it in, add the peanut butter.

Once the butter, white chocolate, and peanut butter are about halfway mixed in slowly begin to add in the powdered sugar.

Finally, add in any additional candies such as Reese’s and M&M’s! If you want to add some other goodies, check out the paragraph below for some fun ideas!

Optional Additions and Changes

This combination is pretty incredible as is but everyone has different preferences. Here are some ideas to change this recipe up a bit-

If you make any other changes that are delicious be sure to leave it in the comments down below, I’d love to also give it a taste!

Expert Tips and Tricks

One of the most important tips I have for you, and I cannot express this enough, use a larger bowl than you’d expect!

Another tip that is more important than it seems is to slowly mix in the powdered sugar. If you add the large amount it requires all at once you’re sure to make a mess when attempting to mix it in.

My last tip for you is to allow the mixture to fully cool before putting away. By placing it in an airtight container while the butter and chocolate are still warm, it will cause condensation and ultimately end up with some not-so-crunchy pieces.

Christmas Muddy Buddies FAQ’s

Everyone has their own family traditions and ways of making Muddy Buddies but here are a few answers to some general questions that may come up when making this dessert.

How long does this take to make?

Once you have all the ingredients gathered there really only assembly necessary. To assemble and mix it will take about 10 minutes. Unfortunately, when powdered sugar is involved there’s usually a mess. Don’t be surprised if it takes another 5 minutes to clean up all the stray sugar!

How should Christmas Muddy Buddie be stored?

Store your Muddy Buddies in an airtight container in room-temperature.

Are Muddy Buddies the same as Puppy Chow?

There isn’t a specific difference between Muddy Buddies and Puppy Chow. If you are from the midwest, you know the two are interchangeable and a staple at every holiday!

close up of Christmas Muddy Buddies

A Word From A Registered Dietitian

I’m not going to try and make this flowery. This Christmas Muddy Buddies is quite sweet. That doesn’t make it ‘bad’. Food has no morals. No food is ‘good’ or ‘bad’.

This is a delicious mixture to have around the holidays that brings people together and can be shared to show your love! This may not be a great item to have all day, every day. That’s totally fine.

A healthy and balanced diet includes foods you enjoy and bring you happiness.

A Word From A Registered Dietitian

The holiday season can bring about more Christmas pie than you typically eat. For some this can lead to anxiety and for others they embrace the sweets!

If you are one that gets anxiety by being surrounded by the plethora of indulgences remind yourself that this is a holiday season. Having so many desserts offered isn’t typical. This is a time to enjoy friends and family while sharing their homemade goodies.

In the long run, having a few extra desserts throughout the month won’t make a big impact on your health but the memories you make will last.

Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Balls with Caramel Ingredients

You only need 5 ingredients for these simple Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Balls!

  • Powdered Sugar– ensure this is fresh and soft
  • Peanut Butter– this is the perfect time to use a brand such as Jif or Skippy
  • Butter– Use unsalted, unless your peanut butter is unsalted
  • Chocolate– Your average milk chocolate chips will get the job done
  • Caramel– I used small caramel bits from Kraft brand, but you could also cut a Werther’s Original caramel in half if you cannot find these
old fashioned peanut butter balls in a clear bowl

How to Make These Peanut Butter Buckeyes

Making these Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Balls with Caramel is easy, but time consuming.

To start, mix together the powdered sugar, butter, and peanut butter. Use your teaspoon scoop to grab an even portion of dough. Flatten it out and place a caramel bit in the center. Close it up and roll it around in your palms to create a smooth, round ball. Place on a baking dish and repeat until all the dough it used.

I recommend you turn on a show or video. This recipe makes about 75 peanut butter balls. You’re going to be doing this for about 20 minutes.

Once done, place in freezer for 20+ minutes.

When you are ready to start coating the peanut butter balls in chocolate add a couple handfuls of chocolate chips to a microwave safe bowl and melt the chocolate until smooth.

Remove the rounded peanut butter balls from the freezer. Drop one at a time in the bowl of chocolate, using a spoon to ensure it is fully covered in chocolate. This will be messy (and also time consuming).

If you don’t want so much chocolate on these Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Balls just drizzle the chocolate on top. This will be a large time saver as well!

Place the finished product in the freezer for 15+ minutes to harden. When ready, place in an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator or freezer.

Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Balls with Caramel Variations

Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Balls are basically the same as what some consider a ‘Buckeye’. It’s a mixture of peanut butter, sugar, and butter that is shaped into spheres, froze, and dipped in chocolate. Basically, a homemade Reese’s peanut butter cup!

One variation is this recipe AKA stuffing it with caramel!

Instead of milk chocolate try dark chocolate or white chocolate. Both would be awesome choices!

Another would be to use a different nut butter. Try almond butter, sunbutter, or a fun high-protein nut butter from Nuts ‘N More (use code PIECEOFLULU10 for 10%)!

You could even do all of the above, and take it even furtherroll the buckeye in chopped fruit, nuts, sprinkles or seeds! This will definitely make for a flavorful dessert.

Baking Tips

If you are finding yourself struggling with any aspect of these Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Balls with Caramel, here are some tips that you may find handy:

  • If you are struggling with removing the dough from a classic one teaspoon measuring cup, use one of these one teaspoon cookie dough scoops. You will be able to press proper amount of dough right into your hands!
  • If you are about halfway through rolling your dough you may find that it is getting a bit soft. Place it in the fridge for 15-30 minutes to cool back down and become easier to work with.
  • If you find the dough is sticking to your hands too much, dip the tips of your fingers in water. This should fix your issue!

  • When warming up your chocolate chips do as little amount of time as possible. If you microwave it for 30 seconds and they come out with a few small pieces still in-tact, use a spoon to mix the chocolate around until it is smooth.
  • Start with a small amount of peppermint extract. Mix it into your chocolate then give it a taste. The smell can be overwhelming and you won’t know if you found the right balance until you taste it!
  • Don’t stress if your graham crackers keep breaking. It’s inevitable that a few will end up in crumbs. Use what you can. If you only have small pieces, they all will taste the same no matter what.
  • Make sure to use the wax paper, as instructed in the directions!
  • Confused about the coconut oil? If you add it to your chocolate it won’t give your chocolate a coconut-y flavor. You would be using a very small amount!

1. Emotional Support Water Bottle

It is guaranteed that that foodie in your life already has a water bottle that they carry around like it’s attached to them. That doesn’t mean they don’t need another! There’s something about carrying around a cute cup that makes drinking water easier.

2. Edible Arrangement

Your average person loves to receive flowers. Your average foodie loves to receive an Edible Arrangement. This is a fruit bouquet shaped like flowers with some pieces dipped in chocolate. This is the best idea for when you need to send your gift!

3. Cutting Boards as Healthy Foodie Gifts

There’s two different routes you can go down if you’re looking to purchase one for a foodie friend. You could get a beautiful wooden cutting board or one that is more practical.

You can get cheaper wooden cutting boards or a bit more expensive ones that may be made with a higher quality wood. If you want to make it a bit more personalized, you can get one with your friend’s name engraved on it from Etsy.

Did you know you are supposed to cut your meat and produce on separate cutting boards? Now you do! This pack of plastic cutting boards are skid-free and have little images of what each one should be used for!

4. Air Fryer

Nearly everyone has an airfryer now. Be sure to double-check if the foodie in your life has one before gifting them one. Having one is great but having two is a bit unnecessary. Now that they’re so widely used they have become quite affordable. This one from Amazon is cute and under $60!

5. Fun Foods

There are SO MANY fun foods on the market now. Your foodie LOVES to give them all a taste. I did say these would be healthy foodie gifts, but I mean everything in moderation, right!? The issue? They can get pretty pricey. Grab a couple fun foods for your food ie to taste test!

  • Nut Butters
    • Use this link or code pieceoflulu to get 10% off Nuts’n’More nut butters. I highly recommend their chocolate chip cookie dough and white chocolate pretzel flavors!
  • Protein Powders
    • People all have their preferences on what protein powders they like. I would say a peanut butter chocolate one is pretty safe. Use code LAURENK10 at ascentprotein.com for 10% off (and get the peanut butter chocolate whey protein powder!!)
  • Chocolates
    • Everyone loves chocolate but regular chocolate isn’t special. Go to your nearest health foods store or Kroger and you’ll be amazed at the amount of fun-flavored chocolate bars they have available!

6. Cute Dish Towels and Heating Pads

Every season Target and T.J. Maxx has the most adorable dish towels and heating pads (you know, the things you place hot pans on!). I recommend you go there first, but if you don’t have time to go in-person, Amazon is always a good back-up.

7. Herb Garden Supplies

Most foodies have a goal of growing a garden, or at the least a few herbs. This is an ADORABLE little indoor herb garden set. It comes with 5 packs of herb seeds and everything you need to cultivate a successful herb garden.

8. Utensils

  2. Reusable Straws
  3. Wooden Spoons

Many local boutiques specialize in oils and spices now! You can pop in to one of those OR you can make your own infused oils!

Pick up a cute, small glass bottle from a craft store, place a large piece of rosemary (or another herb) in the container, and fill with a high quality olive oil. You can even make it a bit cuter my tying some twine or ribbon around it! It’s such a thoughtful and usable gift!

10. Local Coffee

In Yelp type in your foodies address then type in coffee in the search bar. Get your foodie a gift certificate or a bag of coffee beans from one!

11. Wholesaler Membership or Gift Card

The bill racks up quick at wholesale stores. Get your foodie a Costco, Bj’s, or Sam’s Club membership (or a gift card if they already have one).

These bento box containers are so cool! All the little compartments. The reusable utensils. I’m obsessed. I can’t find the box I have, but here is a similar one.

13. Plate Set

Plates are a necessary basic, but that doesn’t mean your fooie friend doesn’t need a refresh every now and again.

14. Local Restaurant Gift Certificate

Every foodie has their favorite restaurant(s). By getting them a gift certificate to it, it shows you know them and know what they love!

15. Cute Lunch Bag

Honestly, most lunch bags are a bit ugly. This is a cute option for under $10! Here is another one that is a bit more expensive but it looks as though it could pass for a purse.

16. Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods Gift Card

Trader Joe’s has fun foods that they come out with each season. They also have some foods they offer all year-round, but you can only find them at Trader Joe’s.

Whole Foods also has some food brands that aren’t available elsewhere. By getting your foodie a gift card to either retailer allows them to have fun shopping around for something they’ve never tried!

17. A Fun Mug

Everyone has a ton of mugs. Everyone wants more. You can find affordable cute mugs at Target or you can get a handmade one from Etsy. Both are going to be loved!

19. Baking or Cooking Class

During the panorama many bakeries and restaurants created new aspects of their businesses. That means it’s likely that your favorite local shops have class options. Check out their websites and see!

Another thing that came out of the panorama is virtual classes. You can now take these classes from your own home!

20. An Apron

Aprons are something people don’t have, until they need one. Get your foodie friend a cute stripped one. If you want something a bit more personal, you can get one custom made on Etsy (i’ve done this and it was a hit!).

21. Coffee Syrups

There are so many different coffee syrups available now. You can get the basic vanilla,, hazelnut, and caramel flavors at Target and grocery stores. You can also get some more out-of-the-box flavors at T.J.Maxx. If you want to step it up, check out this vanilla bean syrup.

22. Frother

Along with the coffee syrups, they may also like a frother. This is helpful for making an elevated latte or coffee. If you want to take it to the next level, get them an electric hot and cold frother. I’d want this!
