Why You’ll LOVE This Recipe
These Hot Chocolate Waffles are the perfect breakfast for a snowy winter day. They combine the comfort of homemade waffles and joy from a cup of hot chocolate!
My favorite type of waffles are ones with a crip outside and a fluffy center. So, that’s what I developed! If you love that type of waffle too, you’ll love these!
When to Make Hot Chocolate Waffles
You can make these waffles whenever you’d like- breakfast, lunch, dinner, winter, summer, fall, etc.
But, I would highly reccommend making them on a cold winter morning. This recipe can bring together your family.
Excite the kids by telling them what’s for breakfast and have them help mix the batter! Then, allow them to add their favorite toppings.
This will soon become a nostalgic recipe reserved for these precious mornings.
Ingredients
This Hot Chocolate Waffle recipe is similar to typical waffle recipes, with a few key changes. Some of the main ingredients are:
Hot Chocolate– I used Starbucks Double Chocolate Hot Chocolate. Be sure to use a full-sweet variety!
Vanilla Extract– You don’t need to use your best vanilla extract for this recipe. The hot chocolate flavor will dominate, but it does add to the flavor profile.
Vegetable Oil– These waffles are soft and fluffy on the inside and crip on the outside due to the oil. I love waffles like this!
In addition to these ingredients you’ll also need some kitchen staples- baking soda, baking powder, all-purpose flour, milk, and eggs.
How to Make Hot Chocolate Waffles
Create some magic in your kitchen when making this special recipe. Put on your apron, turn on some good music, and pull out your waffle maker!
You only need one bowl for this recipe that means no need to dirty a sink-full of dishes just to make some waffles!
Before you start, get your waffle iron warming up!
In a large bowl add in flour, hot chocolate mix, baking soda, baking powder, vanilla extract, eggs, milk, and oil.
Once your waffle iron is ready (some will have a light that turns on or off). Generously spray both sides of the iron with a non-stick spray then add in a portion of waffle mix.
If you have a waffle iron with a light that indicates when the waffle is done, go by that. If not, you can know your waffle is done cooking when it doesn’t stick to the iron as you open it and you can easily remove the waffle without issue.
Additions and Swaps
There are endless pairing combinations to enjoy with hot chocolate waffles! Here are some that I have tried out-
- Strawberries, blueberries, or banana slices
- Maple Syrup
- Vanilla Ice Cream
- Whipped Cream
- Chocolate Sauce
- Crushed Candy Canes
- Mini Marshmallows
- Butter

Expert Tips and Tricks
There is no additional sugar in this batter. In my opinion, the Starbucks Double Hot Chocolate mix is sweet enough. If you like a sweeter waffle add 1/4 cup of sugar to the batter!
Avoid opening your waffle iron while the waffle is still cooking. If you do, the waffle may stick to either side and be broken in half. This will result in a bit of a mess!
You can actually meal prep waffles! If you have a bit more time in the morning you can make a large batch of batter and cook them each morning. If you are a bit tighter on time, cook all of your waffles ahead of time and simply warm them back up in the toaster or airfryer for a good-as-fresh waffle!
Add a less sweet flavor to these waffles. The hot chocolate flavor profile is strong, as we want. But, a better eating experience happens with a variety of flavors; enjoy this meal with a glass of milk!
A Word From A Registered Dietitian
A batch of Hot Chocolate Waffles sounds as if it may be a ‘sugar overload’ of a breakfast. This is just one meal. A balanced diet is accumulated over a large period of time. Consider this single meal into your year of eating. It’s pretty insignificant!
Beyond the nutrition facts, a fun and creative meal can bring about so many deeper benefits than any ‘superfood’ or ‘green juice’ ever could. A meal like this creates memories and a time to bond with family. That is the power of food.
