You have two options as to when to make these overnight oats:

  1. Make a single serving at night, set it in the fridge, and grab it on your way to work in the morning.
  2. Make a large batch at the beginning of the week and scoop out a portion every morning. If you plan to add fresh ingredients, this may be the most efficient option for you!

Oreo Overnight Oats Additions

There are SO MANY items you can add to make these Oreo Overnight Oats unique.

  1. Add a serving of protein powder. Use LAURENK10 for a discount on Ascent Protein’s website. I recommend their Cookies and Cream flavor for even more delicious oats!
  2. Add fruit. Top these oats with freshly sliced strawberries for a great flavor profile.
  3. Add chia seeds. This is a simple way to up the nutrition in this recipe. They will also absorb some of the liquid and be a bit more large and soft!
  4. If you have a big sweet tooth in the morning you could even add a teaspoon of cocoa powder for an extreme chocolate-flavor.

Overnight Oat Ingredients

Old Fashioned Oats: Be sure to use old fashioned oats and not quick oats. This kind are able to not become a soggy mess overnight!

Fresh Blueberries: This is a great way to add to your daily fruit and veggie intake and add in some extra flavor.

Lemon Juice: You can either use the juice from 1/2 a lemon or 1.5 tablespoons of lemon juice. Both taste delicious. Pick whichever you perfer.

Milk: By using skim milk you are adding in some extra protein without added fat.

Lemon Protein Powder: I use Lemon flavored protein powder to pack in all the lemon flavor I can get. Use LAURENK10 on Ascent’s website to save some money! If you are okay with less lemon flavor, a vanilla protein powder will also work well!

Blueberry Nutrition

Blueberries are one of the most popular fruits in America. They are known for being packed with antioxidants. This means they help stop oxidation (this is usually good!)

Blueberries are naturally sweet. This means you don’t need to add in extra sweeteners when utilizing them! That makes for a sweet dish without the not-so-sweet nutrition content!

Blueberries are also a source of dietary fiber. Add an extra handful on your morning oats if you are looking to pump up your daily fiber intake! If you want to learn more about fiber read my article: Fiber, An Important Carbohydrate.

Ingredients

You really only need 3 ingredients to make Overnight Oats with Frozen Fruit but, I do add a couple others that add some texture and flavor!

Oats: You need to use old-fashioned oats! Quick oats won’t hold up to this recipe.

Milk: I like to use non-fat milk for it’s great nutrition profile.

Frozen Fruit: This can be any variety you like! Just try to make the pieces even in size.

Optional Ingredients:

Sliced Almonds: Adding in a nut will create more texture in your oats. I love almonds but you can just use your favorite type!

Salt: Only a very small amount is needed, but it can bring out the flavors in the dish.

How to Make Overnight Oats with Frozen Fruit

Even if you have never made overnight oats before this is going to be a breeze to assemble!

In an airtight container (such as tupperware or the classic mason jar), add in your oats, milk, and chopped frozen fruit. This is also the time to add any additions such as nuts, nut butters, or seeds that you would like. Finally, stir everything until thoroughly combined. Store in the fridge until you are ready to eat!

Overnight Oat Additions

Once you get a hang for the proportions any flavor combination is possible! Here are some ideas to try using frozen fruit:

  • Almonds, peanut butter, and frozen bananas
  • Frozen peaches, chia seeds, and yogurt
  • Mini chocolate chips and frozen strawberries
  • Frozen blueberries with chia seeds
  • Chopped walnuts with frozen cherries

I love frozen cherries! If you haven’t used them in your overnight oats with frozen fruit yet, get on it!

A Healthy Breakfast Option

Overnight oats are one of the easiest and most healthy breakfast options out there. Oatmeal is chock-full with heart-healthy whole grains and fiber while the milk gives the dish protein and and tons of vitamins and minerals. Any additions give the breakfast more flavors, tastes, and textures.

The flavor profiles of overnight oats are basically endless! Let me know in the comments below what your favorite overnight oat flavor combo is!

How to Open A Pistachio

If you’ve ever had a pistachio before you know that cracking one open is a whole job. In order to push off the urge to never touch a pistachio again, I found a few different ways to open those pesky pistachios that seem the be glued closed!

  • For some, you can open the shell easily with your fingers
  • Nutcrackers aren’t just for walnuts- use a nutcracker!
  • Place a handful on a safe counter space and cover with a towel. Use a hammer (or something of the similar) to slam just enough pressure on the nuts
  • Use an empty shell of another nut to pry them open

If all else fails, be sure to buy a package of pre-cracked pistachios next time. Yes, those do exist- LOL!

Health Benefits of Pistachio Overnight Oats

Pistachios are such an underrated nut. Unlike other nuts, a serving of pistachios is much larger. Instead of having a handful of almonds, you could have 49 pistachios. What’s that? Like 3 handfuls?!

In that serving size you get 3g of fiber and 6g of fiber. That’s a decent amount for a small snack!

Pistachios are also great for aiding in reducing your cholesterol. A study found that replacing some of your calories with pistachios can help reduce your cholesterol. Actually, 67% of those in this study reduced their LDL (bad) and increased their HDL (good) cholesterol. That’s awesome!
