Because all recipes will vary, I am going to base the nutrition on two similar recipes. In the nutrition infographic and the explanations below, the pumpkin pie recipe is referring to the Perfect Pumpkin Pie and Sweet Potato Pie Recipe from AllRecipes. This way, we can be on the same page, not thinking of different pies!
For better visualization, the nutrition facts are based off of a single slice from an 8-piece pie.

Pumpkin Pie Nutrition
Yum! Pumpkin Pie!
A slice of pumpkin pie has about 379 calories, 31g of carbohydrates, 14g of dietary fat, and 6g of protein.
Let’s break this down a bit. For a dessert, 379 calories really isn’t too high! Plus, who even considered you could get a few extra grams of protein during dessert!
There are about 580µg of Vitamin A in a slice of pumpkin pie. For reference, the recommended daily allowance (RDA) is 900µg for men and 700µg for women.1 That means by having a slice of pie you are getting a healthy dose of nutrition to benefit your eyesight, immune system, and organ function.2

Sweet Potato Pie Nutrition
A slice of sweet potato pie has about 389 calories, 48g of carbohydrates, 21g of dietary fat, and 5g of protein.
While this a very slight increase in calories, carbs, and fat with a gram less of protein, that does NOT make it the inferior option!
Sweet potato pie has about 115mg of calcium. Based on the classic 2,000 calorie diet that’s about 10% of your daily needs, just from a slice of pie!
Just a heads up, sweet potato pie is a bit sweeter (if you couldn’t tell by the name!) so, accordingly, it has a bit more sugar.
Pumpkin Pie vs Sweet Potato Pie: The Baking
Baking both a pumpkin pie and sweet potato pie are very similar! In both, you use an electric mixer to combine all pie filling ingredients then add to your crust.
The main difference lies in the baking technique. A pumpkin pie will go into the oven at a high temperature to start, then lower the temperature and continue cooking. For example, it may go into the oven at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes then at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 more minutes. On the other hand, a sweet potato pie can go into the oven for the same temperature the entire time!
Pumpkin Pie vs Sweet Potato Pie: The Flavor
The Similarities
Both pies visually look quite a lot alike. If I wasn’t looking at it up close, I could never tell the difference.
They each are typically had in a a crust without crust covering the filling. That means both have exposed orange centers.
Beyond the sweet potato and pumpkin, the rest of the ingredients are very similar.
The Differences
As mentioned earlier, sweet potato pies tend to be a bit sweeter (unless you add a lot of sugar to pumpkin pie of course!).
Pumpkin pie tends to be a bit smoother than sweet potato pie. It also tastes ‘less starchy’ than sweet potato pie, if that makes senes!
Pumpkin Pie vs Sweet Potato Pie: The Consumption
Every family has their own traditions of how they enjoy their pumpkin or sweet potato pie. There are some go-to ways that have lead the path on how to best enjoy your slice of pie.
The Similarities
Both pumpkin pie and sweet potato pie are often consumed with whipped topping! It’s a light and sweet addition that makes a great pairing.
They are also both common to have around Thanksgiving, making the distinction even more difficult.
The Differences
Most people will add whipped cream to both pies but, it is a bit of a joke that a 1:1 ratio of whipped cream to pumpkin pie is appropriate!
So, you may be enjoying a slice of sweet potato pie with a simple dollop of whipped cream while you may have your pumpkin pie completely covered by whipped cream!
A Word From a Registered Dietitian
As you can tell, there are some slight differences in the nutrition profiles between pumpkin pie and sweet potato pie. The thing is, you don’t eat nutrients. You eat food. That means if you will only eat sweet potato pie, enjoy it! If you will only enjoy pumpkin pie, have a slice!
Enjoy whichever type of pie you prefer in moderation while knowing you’re getting more nutrients than you may expect!
