When you think about Halloween you probably picture fun costumes, scary movies, and over-sized bags of candy. This year make it a healthy Halloween by making a few small adjustments.
Some see this as a fun and exciting holiday to enjoy the sweet treats while for others it may give anxiety and concern because self-restraint isn’t possible.
I’m sure your candy and sweets intake will increase around this time, but that’s totally fine! Health is about an accumulation of most days, not just a week of time during a celebration.
Start Your Day Right
Some ways to stay healthy during Halloween are to start your day with a healthy and balanced breakfast. This will keep you full without reaching for the fun-sized bags of candy you’ll be seeing on everyone’s desk!
Try out my Pumpkin Baked Oats. They’re easy as can be, can be had all week long, and most importantly they exude the fall flavors while still being healthy! Have it cold or warm and topped with a scoop of vanilla greek yogurt for a delicious and filling breakfast!
p.s. you could add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and have this as a healthy dessert as well!
Move The Candy Out Of Sight
Instead of mindlessly grabbing bag after bag of candy sitting in front of you keep your candy away and out of sight in a cupboard. This way you must stand up and go grab one. Doing this places more obstacles in your way, rather than when they’re staring back at you on your desk!
Other Healthy Options
You can celebrate without overindulgence in candy. There are millions of fun recipes for healthy Halloween colored foods, spooky shapes, and other healthy alternatives to candy.
Try out a Pumpkin Spice Hummus! You can use anything to dip in it-plus you still get the plant-based protein from the garbanzo beans.
Spooky Monster Eyes Halloween Deviled Eggs are a creepy appetizer that is both healthy and perfect for the season!
You can always just make a massive Halloween Charcuterie Board that will please everyone’s tastes! Use your favorite crackers, cheese, fruits, olives, and spreads on large cutting board or surface and graze!
Try fruit dipped in chocolate, pretzel rods in white chocolate, a homemade pumpkin spice latte with fresh pumpkin puree, or apple slices with caramel. This way you are getting your sweet fix but also getting some nutrition with it. win-win.
You don’t need to exile all candy to be healthy. Having some here and there is completely fine- and healthy!

Using Up Your Halloween Candy
Once Halloween is over and the thrill of the fun-size candies dwindles, you’re still left with a massive haul of candy. You may just throw it away to ‘reduce temptation’, but if you are against this type of food waste I have a few ideas for you!
- Combine some with pretzels, nuts, and seeds for a homemade trail mix
- Freeze it and have some throughout the year
- Give it away to co-workers, shelters, nursing homes, or those in need
- Local dentists may even pay per pond for your candy!
- Donate it to troops overseas so they can celebrate too!
- Visit operationshoebox.com if you don’t know how to go about this
- Bake with it! You can’t go wrong with a batch of Reese’s covered brownies!
- Add a chocolate to your mug before you pour in hot coffee, trust me
- Use the jolly ranchers to make a flavorful vodka
