Why You’ll LOVE This Recipe
Do I really need to explain to you why you’ll love this recipe?? This is a holiday classic for my family. If you’ve never had it, I can’t recommend it more!
This recipe makes a generous portion. It is meant to be shared with loved ones and enjoyed all throughout the holidays.
You can keep a dish stocked with Christmas Muddy Buddies to snack on as you pass by, pack an easy after-lunch sweet, or bring to a holiday party! There are SO many occasions this treat can come in handy for. Make it once and enjoy it all month long! (if it makes it that long!)
Ingredients You’ll Need
Christmas Muddy Buddies has all of the goodies you want. The main items are:
Chex– You really can use any flavor of Chex, but I recommend one box of peanut butter and one box of chocolate to really amp up the flavor!
Red and Green M&M’s– These M&M’s are only in stores around the holidays but if you can’t wait check out Amazon for festive M&M’s year-round!
White Chocolate– Using white chocolate instead of milk chocolate will have this version of Muddy Buddies appear more snow-like. Perfect for the chilly holiday season!
Reese’s Bells– I had the TOUGHEST time finding Reese’s bells near me. These would be incredibly cute in this mix but if you’re not up for a $13 bag of chocolate, just use some regular mini Reese’s.
Powdered Sugar– As you may expect, there’s a hefty amount of powdered sugar in Muddy Buddies. Hey, that just means it’s extra sweet!
In addition to these ingredients you’ll want to use a large bowl. If you don’t have a large bowl, you can always do two batches in smaller bowls.
How to Make Christmas Muddy Buddies
Creating a batch is more about mixing, rather than actual baking. This makes for a great recipe to make with kids! They can be tasked with throwing in the items, mixing it up, and maybe only having a couple sneaky pieces!
In a very large bowl add the peanut butter and chocolate Chex pieces. Give this a good mix.
Next up, melt your stick of butter and white chocolate. Drizzle those onto the Chex. Before you begin to mix it in, add the peanut butter.
Once the butter, white chocolate, and peanut butter are about halfway mixed in slowly begin to add in the powdered sugar.
Finally, add in any additional candies such as Reese’s and M&M’s! If you want to add some other goodies, check out the paragraph below for some fun ideas!
Optional Additions and Changes
This combination is pretty incredible as is but everyone has different preferences. Here are some ideas to change this recipe up a bit-
- Add some holiday shaped pretzels.
- Crushed candy canes would add incredible holiday colors!
- Give some Ghirardelli Chocolate a quick chop and pop them in.
- Salted peanuts would add a salty taste.
- Mini marshmallows would infuse a great new texture.

Expert Tips and Tricks
One of the most important tips I have for you, and I cannot express this enough, use a larger bowl than you’d expect!
Another tip that is more important than it seems is to slowly mix in the powdered sugar. If you add the large amount it requires all at once you’re sure to make a mess when attempting to mix it in.
My last tip for you is to allow the mixture to fully cool before putting away. By placing it in an airtight container while the butter and chocolate are still warm, it will cause condensation and ultimately end up with some not-so-crunchy pieces.
