- Carbs should be avoided at all costsDo NOT go on a carb-free diet. PLEASE. Your brain alone needs 5g of glucose an hour to function. Your brain is the highest priority so if it isn’t getting what it needs your body will adjust in order to continue it’s functioning (which is a whole other spiel involving keto). A good starting place is to be having 50-60% of your daily calories to be carbs. So no fear! Carbohydrates=Energy!
- Fat will make you fatFats make you feel full! Although, you shouldn’t be eating them in excess you still need them. Unlike carbs and protein which have 4kcal/g, fats have 9kcal/g. Fat is a macronutrient (you know, like the big three Carbs, Protein, and Fats) making it essential and beneficial for healthy hormones, immunity function, and energy!
- The more protein, the betterNope! The Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) recommends .8kg/lb. If you are American like me just multiply your weight by .36 and this is how many grams of protein you should be getting a day (remember everybody is different and has different needs- this is just a good measure!). Try spreading this protein intake through your day because your body can only absorb so much at a time, 20-30g). So those ultra high muscle building protein drinks with 90g of protein are a waste of money. You just need enough protein for your specific body needs and goals.
- You need green juice to detox your bodyDon’t think that you need to juice 5 stalks of celery, 3 apples, a cucumber, and an inch of ginger to detoxify your body. Although these foods are giving you plenty of benefits, by juicing you are taking the fiber out. As a nutritionist, I am not saying I don’t love hearing people incorporate more of these foods in their diet but their reasoning may be a bit skewed. Lucky for you, you were born with an organ (the liver) that does this detoxification process for you for free! So stop spending $10 on a green juice because you need to detox, buy a $10 green juice because you want it.
- Anything gluten-free is more healthy. Do you even know what gluten is? Gluten is a protein. Proteins are made up of amino acids and depending on what amino acids are combined determines the resulting protein and it’s function. Gluten is a combination proline and glutamine and in food it acts kind of like a stretchy glue. Because of this function it is normally found in foods like pizza dough. You wouldn’t be scared of any other protein would you? Unless you have Celiac’s Disease or are gluten-intolerant there’s no need to avoid gluten! (plus you can stop paying those dang gluten-free up-charges)
- If I eat past 8pm I’ll gain weightIf your body is telling you that you’re hungry, you should eat. It could be because you haven’t eaten enough for the activity you’ve done that day or simply because you need some more dang food! You can only gain weight when you eat an excess of calories. Late meals have this bad rep because usually by this time you may be craving sweets or have been restricting and end up over-indulging, causing the excess of calories and leading to weight gain. Simply, eat if you are hungry, no matter the time.
